Ohio Driver’s License Process
Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC)
If you are 15 ½ years old, you can apply for Ohio’s temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC). To apply, you need to:
- Have your parents’ consent
- Pass a written exam
- Pass a vision exam
Your temporary instruction permit identification card is valid for one year.
Probationary Driver’s License
If you are under 18 years old, you can apply for your probationary driver’s license provided you meet the following requirements:
- Have a TIPIC for a minimum of six months
- Complete a driver education course
- Have 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of night driving
- Pass a driving and skills test
Your probationary driver’s license is valid until the 20th day after your 21st birthday.
Adult Driver’s License
If you have not had a license before, you must apply for a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC).

Driving Without Car Insurance In Ohio

Ohio Teen Driving Laws
If you are under 16 years old and have a temporary instruction permit identification card, you can drive only under the supervision of a parent, guardian or licensed instructor sitting in the front seat.
If you are over 16 and have a TIPIC, you can drive when accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21+ years old. Exceptions extend between midnight and 6 a.m. when your supervisor can be a parent or guardian, only.
For the first 12 months with a probationary driver’s license, you are not permitted to:
- Drive unsupervised between midnight and 6 a.m. without a parent or guardian. Exceptions include driving to/from school, work or religious activities.
- Transport more than one non-family passenger unless supervised by a parent or guardian
After the first 12 months with a probationary driver’s license and before you turn 18, you are not permitted to drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless you go to/from school, work or religious activities.
Ohio Seat Belt Laws
Seat belts reduce the number of fatalities on the road. The following seat belt laws apply in Ohio:
- Drivers and passengers in the front seats are required to wear seat belts
- Children between 8 and 15 years old need to be properly buckled by a safety belt or another restraint device
- Children between 4 and 8 years old must be transported in booster seats
- Children under 4 years old must be transported in safety seats
